Talk:Offa of Mercia

Also, Mercia developed an effective political structure and adopted Christianity later than the other kingdoms. The name Mercia is Old English for “boundary folk” see Welsh Marches , and the traditional interpretation is that the kingdom originated along the frontier between the native Welsh and the Anglo-Saxon invaders. Hunter Blair argued an alternative interpretation: While its earliest boundaries will never be known, there is general agreement that the territory that was called “the first of the Mercians” in the Tribal Hidage covered much of south Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire and Northern Warwickshire. Coming to power around , he built a fortress at Tamworth which became the seat of Mercia’s kings. His son Pybba succeeded him in Cearl , a kinsman of Creoda, followed Pybba in ; in , Cearl gave his daughter Cwenburga in marriage to Edwin , king of Deira whom he had sheltered while he was an exiled prince. Penda and the Mercian Supremacy Main articles: Some of what is known about Penda comes through the hostile account of Bede , who disliked him both for being an enemy king to Bede’s own Northumbria and for being a pagan.

The second day of the International Congress on Medieval Studies —which is where my reporting backlog currently sits , alas—began reflectively… The Nature of the Middle Ages: The scheduled presenters each picked their own targets for their muses, as follows:

Æthelbald of Mercia’s wiki: Æthelbald (also spelled Ethelbald, or Aethelbald) (died ) was the King of Mercia, in what is now the English Midlands from until he was killed in Æthelbald was the son of Alweo and thus a grandson of Eowa, who was the br.

Heptarchy During Wilfrid’s lifetime Britain and Ireland consisted of a number of small kingdoms. Traditionally the English people were thought to have been divided into seven kingdoms, but modern historiography has shown that this is a simplification of a much more confused situation. A native British kingdom, later called the Kingdom of Strathclyde , survived as an independent power into the 10th century in the area which became modern-day Dunbartonshire and Clydesdale.

It also appears likely that the Irish settled in parts of Wales, and even after the period of Irish settlement, Irish missionaries were active in Britain. Others had been converted by the Hiberno-Scottish mission, chiefly Irish missionaries working in Northumbria and neighbouring kingdoms. Two-thirds of the work deals with Wilfrid’s attempts to return to Northumbria, and is a defence and vindication of his Northumbrian career. Other, more minor, sources for Wilfrid’s life include a mention of Wilfrid in one of Bede’s letters.

This source is highly influenced by the contemporary concerns of its writer, but does attempt to provide some new material besides reworking Bede. The historian Walter Goffart goes further, suggesting that Bede wrote his Historia as a reaction to Stephen’s Vita Sancti Wilfrithi, and that Stephen’s work was written as part of a propaganda campaign to defend a “Wilfridian” party in Northumbrian politics.

Stephen says that Annemund wanted to marry Wilfrid to the archbishop’s niece, and to make Wilfrid the governor of a Frankish province, but that Wilfrid refused and continued on his journey to Rome. However, Annemund’s murder took place in and Wilfrid returned to England in , suggesting that Stephen’s chronology is awry. Bede is silent on the subject of Wilfrid’s monastic status, [47] although Wilfrid probably became a monk during his time in Rome, or afterwards while he was in Gaul.

This influence may be seen in Wilfrid’s probable adoption of a Frankish ceremony in his consecration of churches later in his life, as well as in his employment of Frankish masons to build his churches.

Coenwulf (also spelled Cenwulf, Kenulf, or Kenwulph) was King of Mercia from December until his death in He was a descendant of a sibling of King Penda, who had ruled Mercia in the middle of the 7th succeeded Ecgfrith, the son of Offa; Ecgfrith only reigned for five months, and Coenwulf ascended to the throne in the same year that Offa died.

It is very clear that a letter is more than just a few written words. Conrad realises something is very wrong with his patient. Brian reminds Elana about the confidentiality of information, and Louis is in grave danger. Chanel gives Quinton something to think about, while Annelize thinks she knows why Elana is so nosey. Brian confronts Elana about her interference — and commands her to stay away from his clinical trials. Noami visits Gaynor, and Mercia is nowhere to be found.

His son Harold succeeded to his earldom, and Harold’s earldom was given to Algar, son of earl Leofric. Algar presently went to Ireland, and having collected eighteen pirate ships, returned with them to Wales, where he implored Griffyth the king to lend him his aid against king Edward.

Early history[ edit ] The Staffordshire Hoard , discovered in a field in Hammerwich , near Lichfield in July , is perhaps the most important collection of Anglo-Saxon objects found in England Mercia’s exact evolution at the start of the Anglo-Saxon era remains more obscure than that of Northumbria , Kent , or even Wessex. Mercia developed an effective political structure and adopted Christianity later than the other kingdoms.

Radiocarbon tests have dated the wooden lid to to AD when the area was part of the Saxon kingdom of Mercia. as evidence of prehistoric occupation has been discovered nearby. Furthermore, no pottery or other metalwork was found on the site, which could have helped to date the artifact. Dating back thousands of years are numerous.

Posted on 31 August 18 comments The St Andrews Sarcophagus is one of the more splendid pieces of artwork left to us from Pictish Scotland. The front shows a royal hunt, with various odd hybrid beasties lurking in a tree past which the hunters ride, and elsewhere David killing the lion, and the sides and corners are heavily decorated with interlace and animal and vegetal motives. The interesting thing is that these were not necessarily of the kings themselves, though there was a Mercian royal mausoleum at Repton that the Vikings took over in , still sadly not fully published.

This was presumably meant to prevent any royal cult growing up around the dead king back in East Anglia, in which respect it failed, but Hereford seem also to have been quite glad to have him. In some ways this is not what we have at St Andrews—it is single piece, not built out of parts, and its carving is much less ambitious—but in other ways it is, because of the identity of St Alkmund. What we know happened to Eardwulf is that he was exiled himself in Plunkett therefore brings the Mercian church of Breedon-on-the-Hill into the argument at this point, and indeed has already done so in the relevant chapter because of it too having some unusually high-relief sculpture showing a royal hunt and some Classicising figures that all bear very strong comparisons to the St Andrews material, though he fights shy of actually proposing a connection in either direction.

This saint is apparently unknown elsewhere. Surely it could not be… Eardwulf?

The Chronicle was a West Saxon production, however, and is sometimes thought to be biased in favour of Wessex; hence it may not accurately convey the extent of power achieved by Offa, a Mercian. Charters were documents which granted land to followers or to churchmen and were witnessed by the kings who had the authority to grant the land. All four lines descend from Pybba , who ruled Mercia early in the 7th century. Offa’s line descends through Pybba’s son Eowa and then through three more generations: Osmod, Eanwulf and Offa’s father, Thingfrith.

The couple had a son, Ecgfrith , and four daughters:

It is a substantial paper 61 pages long with 26 diagrams. It is very good with much information, including facies and thickness maps, diagrams showing sea-level changes etc.

The dating method used should follow that used by reliable secondary sources (or if reliable sources disagree, that used most commonly, with an explanatory footnote). Offa of Mercia.

Volume 41, Issues 3—4 , November , Pages A review of tufa and travertine deposits of the world Author links open overlay panel T. Pedleyb Show more https: An attempt is made to standardise the terminology currently in use and to distinguish clearly between ambient temperature deposits tufas , thermal deposits travertines and speleothems.

Consideration is also presented of the physico-chemical and biological processes, often acting together, which are responsible for the precipitation of freshwater calcium carbonate within tufa systems. These processes appear to be climatically controlled. Therefore, tufas may be of value in palaeo-environmental reconstruction, especially if intercalated with peaty material. While the majority of tufa deposits are of post-glacial age some of the most spectacular carbonate precipitates are thermal travertines.

The second part of the paper deals with a world-wide survey of the principal deposits of tufa and travertine. Space prevents a fuller account of the European deposits and the reader is preferred to Pentecost for a wide range of specific examples from Europe and Asia Minor. Previous article in issue.
